7 TED talks every parent should watch

TED Talks are pretty amazing

and once you start watching them, they can become quite obsessive. Which isn’t a bad thing considering there are so many talks on seriously interesting topics that can keep you updated with what truly matters in this world.

One of my favorite topics to watch are parenting TED Talks, because this parenting can be pretty difficult at times and it’s nice to know that we aren’t alone.

Here is my must watch recommended playlist for parents, especially new parents.

  1. Improving early child development with words: Dr. Brenda Fitzgerald at TEDxAtlanta

Do you know that the simple practice of talking to babies and toddlers provides nourishment for their brains, setting them up for better performance in school, and even a higher IQ? A study by researchers Betty Hart and Todd Risley found that some children heard thirty million fewer words by their 4th birthdays than others, leading to demonstrated lower achievement.

Dr. Fitzgerald is on a mission to close the “30 million word gap.” In this TED talk. Dr. Brenda Fitzgerald hands over the simplest recipe to the parents to set their kids on the path of success. Dr. Fitzgerald puts emphasis on the early years development of the brain and also points out that the consumption of video content on TV or internet can not substitute the development through interpersonal interactions.

If we want children to thrive in our complicated world, we need to teach them how to think. In this talk, educator Brian Oshiro teaches us how we can do it with 4 simple questions.
Go beyond “what?” — and ask “how?” and “why?”
How do they know it?
How do their perspectives differ from other people?
How to solve the problem?

You can improve and support your kid’s critical thinking by asking a few extra questions each day. Ask your kid these types of questions to test their understanding on important concepts, to understand the depth of their knowledge and identify the gaps in the knowledge.

5. Why we should all be reading aloud to children | Rebecca Bellingham | TEDxYouth@BeaconStreet

Why should we keep reading aloud to kids even when they can already “read on their own?” This talk demonstrates the magic of reading aloud and reminds us all why reading aloud is so essential- at school and also at home. This talk is for parents who want to teach comprehension and connect with their child in powerful ways.
While reading on their own, kids are occupied with decoding the tangle of letters and sounds, tricky words and vocabulary. But reading aloud frees the child up and gives the child access to the transformative power of the story; to deeply think, learn and discuss different perspectives and big ideas about the world, about others and about ourselves..

So parents, fix a time in your routine, set your phone aside, take a book and a few pillows, and immerse in the wonderful world of words with your kids.
